SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains heavy discussion of plot details from the newest Unwanteds Quests books. You are at risk of major spoilers if you haven't read up to the newest installment in the series. Be careful!

Thisbe was the main character of the Unwanteds Quests series, and was the younger sister of Alex and Aaron Stowe, and the twin sister of Fifer Stowe. Thisbe was incredibly magically gifted, being able to shoot sparks out of her eyes and fingers, and got most spells right on the first try.

Personality

Thisbe is confident and strong. She is easily angered and disagrees with people often, leading to fights, especially with her brother, Alex. Thisbe is tough, but she really loves her family and friends deeply, leading her to be protective around other people. She has a rebellious and reckless streak, getting her into many bad situations. But she's also smart and loyal. She doesn't like hurting people and is fearful of using her dangerous magic. Thisbe's intentions are almost always good, trying to protect herself or the people around her. She is an incredibly good actor and liar.

As a baby, Alex describes her as bookish and dramatic.[1] Mr. Appleblossom says that she is "sweet, yet thorny as a rose" and that "determined, full of life, this one will be."[2] Crow says that she doesn't stop until she gets what she wants.[3] Liam says she is filled with intensity and passion.[4] Aaron says that she's like him, and says that she puts all her energy into everything she does.[5] The Revinir says that she's a good liar.[6]

The Revinir says that Thisbe is more evil than good, but this is never confirmed by other dragons, and it's unclear whether or not the Revinir is lying. It seems to be true, as the Revinir "detected" that she was "much" more evil than good.[7]

Appearance

Thisbe has curly[8][9][10][11][12][13] dark hair[9][14][10][12][13] that is styled in a pixie cut[14][11][15] with bangs.[16][17] She has black eyes.[18][13] She has darker skin than Alex and Aaron.[10][12] She keeps her nails short.[19] When Kaylee is trying to guess Alex's ancestry, she describes him as kind of ambiguous; at first, she suggests southern Europe, like Italy[20], but guesses his mother is from northern Africa or somewhere tropical, like Tahiti.[21] Thisbe and Fifer look incredibly similar to their mother.[10][18][12][13] She also heavily resembles Maiven Taveer.[22][23]

She's described as being small multiple times[24][25][26], probably in reference to her height. Maiven's pretty tall[27], though, and Thisbe can fit in her clothing[28]; though she does get taller.[29]

After Dragon Bones, Thisbe has iridescent dragon scales on her arms and legs.[30][31] She also has the Revinir's brand on the back of her neck. She is wiry and muscular after her time in Grimere.[15][29] Her hair also probably grows longer after Dragon Captives, although its length isn't confirmed later on.

"Now his mother and father each held a baby girl with dark brown ringlets."
― The Unwanteds: Island of Legends, "Fear Replanted" (289)
"Their features were just as identical as Alex and Aaron’s. The boys resembled their fair-skinned, dark-haired father, but the girls had the sharper features and deeper complexion of their mother. Alex hadn’t noticed it before, but now he couldn’t help but see his mother’s face in the angle of their jaws, the tight spring curls in their dark brown hair, and the most unusual trait—their eyes. Alex had only known one person in all his life with true, jet-black irises, and that was his mother. The girls had inherited those. But while Mrs. Stowe’s eyes had looked tired and dead, the girls’ looked alive and full of mischief."

Relationships

Fifer Stowe

Fifer and Thisbe are twin sisters and are incredibly close. At the beginning of the series, the two are nearly inseparable. When separated in Dragon Captives, Fifer seriously struggles, and she is distraught when she goes home and Thisbe doesn't. After that, the two become a lot more passive-aggressive towards each other. Both of them change and gain new, but separate, responsibilities, and it causes tension between them. By Dragon Fire, their relationship is in tatters.[32] Thisbe blames Fifer for causing the problems between them.[33] The two get closer again after the civil war is over, but still go back and forth; especially because Fifer is seen as the "good" twin and Thisbe is seen as the "evil" twin.

Alex Stowe

Alex and Thisbe are siblings. Alex struggles with the responsibility of raising his sisters on top of his head mage duties. Thisbe is very naturally gifted, and it makes Alex worried for the safety of himself and others; this is especially true for Thisbe, since her natural magic can be very destructive. He doesn't fully believe in her, and is upset when she leaves to help the young dragons. He cares about her and wants to protect her, and even goes on the quest to save Thisbe. However, the two were constantly fighting as Thisbe grew up, and she admits that she wasn't all that sad when he died. She hadn't felt much love for him.[34] She doesn't think she would've ever really liked him.[35] She certainly didn't like him before, and doesn't really know how to get past the weirdness of that feeling.[36] In Dragon Fury, Aaron tells her that he can feel that Alex forgives her, and that they're good now.

Aaron Stowe

Aaron and Thisbe are siblings. While Alex struggled with the responsibility tied to Fifer and Thisbe, Aaron didn't. Aaron was seen as the cooler older brother, and he gets along much better with Thisbe than Alex did. Aaron seems to understand Thisbe a lot, but always had a small worry that she might end up like him.[5] When she "betrays" Artimé, Aaron immediately blames himself for her actions, thinking that she took after him. After Ishibashi dies, Aaron almost doesn't forgive Thisbe. Luckily, they make up for it and seem even closer after Dragon Fury.

Seth Holiday

Seth and Thisbe are best friends. He gets along better with her than with Fifer. He's careful to avoid angering her and getting hit by her magic by accident, so he doesn't stand up for himself often.

Dev Suresh

Dev and Thisbe are very close friends. The two have a rough start to their relationship, but get over it. She's the first person he has after Princess Shanti, and feels safe sharing his emotions around her. The two bond over having dragon scales, and she saves him countless times. He's upset that she left him after Dragon Curse, but the two become even closer after their time in Ashguard's Palace together. She is the first person that he has ever considered a real friend.[37] Dev is like a brother to Thisbe[38], and the two refer to each other as family multiple times.[38]

Rohan Suresh

When Thisbe meets Rohan in the Catacombs, he is her only friend. Rohan's crypt in directly behind her's and Thisbe drilled a tunnel so that they could communicate. Before the tunnel, they talked with different series of knocks on the back of the wall. Thisbe is said to blush several times around Rohan, indicating she might've liked him since then. They escape the catacombs together, and Rohan keeps Thisbe's spirits up when the find Alex's grave. He calls her Pria, which he later says is the term meaning "my love" that his parents used for each other. They say goodbye when her and Sky try to go down the volcano, but is relied=ved when she decides to stay and save Maiven Taveer. Thisbe in back in Artimé, but fakes obedience and turns her self in to the Revineer with Drock. She is sent back to the Catacombs. There she sees Rohan, who is acting to be under The Revineer's control. Thisbe is devastated, but she soon finds out that he is acting too. they share a few heartfelt conversations and kiss between their crypts. They escape again and go to Artimé. Rohan is devastated and worried sick when Thisbe is taken. He is shocked and unbelieving when Florence receives the message telling of Thisbe's betrayal. He and the rest of the rescue team head to Grimere, and Rohan and Maiven head on a ghost dragon to seek out Thisbe. Rohan is captured and tries to break through Thisbe's act. He pretends to be effected by the dragon bone broth that the revineer slipped him, but it doesn't affect him since he took several bottles of ancestor broth previously. Once they are alone, Rohan drops his act and begs for Thisbe to explain. Thisbe is heartbroken, but she knows that any of this could be repeated to the revineer so she sends him off. The next morning, he says that he figured it out, though Thisbe won't give in. later that afternoon Rohan takes several more bottles of ancestor broth and Thisbe finally gives in. she tells him everything, and they kiss and change a few loving words. At the end of Dragon Fury, Thisbe decides to stay in Grimere with Rohan, and learn how to eventually take over Maiven's rule.

Thisbe says that he feels like a part of her soul, and she can't imagine life without him.[39] She and Rohan went through so much together, and while they'll never be the same people they used to be, at least they bonded over those experiences.[40]

The Revinir

Emma and Thisbe have a very rocky relationship. Emma keeps Thisbe as a slave, multiple times, and forces her to take bone broths that she clearly does not want to take. Emma is incredibly harsh on Thisbe, believing at first that she broke the raven spell, when it was actually Fifer. Thisbe repeatedly lies to her, and Emma lies right back. Thisbe attempts to gain her trust so she can assassinate her in Dragon Slayers, but empathizes a little too much with the human inside of Emma, and the little girl who just wanted to be seen positively by her siblings. Thisbe recognizes how horrible Emma is, but is unable to be the one to kill her.

Other Notable Relationships

Thisbe is friends with Ibrahim and Clementi. She's also friends with the other black-eyed children, including Prindi, Reza, and Asha. She is also very close to Carina Holiday, her best friend's mom, and Samheed Burkesh, her theater teacher. She's also very close with her grandmother, Maiven Taveer.

Quotes

"I'm not here to be pretty. I'm here to rule this world."
― The Unwanteds Quests: Dragon Slayers, "They Meet Again" (162)

Abilities/Weaknesses

Thisbe is very talented when it comes to magic. She is able to learn many spells just by seeing someone perform it once.

Thisbe can shoot sparks out of her eyes and fingertips. These can cause fires and melt metal. If she's further away from a target, her accuracy and power are better, and she can cause major explosions. Her emotions can also cause fire around her to fluctuate.[41]

Thisbe has a knack for traditional combat.[42] She studied stage combat with Samheed, then took general swordfighting classes and trained privately with Florence.[43]

Thisbe is most talented when it comes to theater, but isn't bad at drawing, either.[44]

Thisbe also has premonitions, giving her some sort of magical insight into what someone else might do. These seem heightened by the dragon bone broth, but Maiven says that she has them too, so it might also be an inherent ability.

Thisbe has some sort of ability to call the ghost dragons.

Thisbe, like the other black-eyed children who drank the dragon-bone broth, is able to breathe fire. She can also let out a loud dragon roar, which can at the very least be understood by other dragons. Her partial dragon abilities also let her sense good and evil levels faintly; only if someone is strongly one or the other.[45]

Fifer and Thisbe have a telepathic link.[46] It doesn't work if they are at all upset with each other.[47] It works best within speaking distance.[48]

Ancestor Broth Visions

Due to drinking the ancestor bone broth, Thisbe has visions of both the past and present.

  • One vision, from her mother, shows what the gorge between worlds used to look like: there was no gorge.[49]

Trivia

  • Alex genuinely considered naming her "Red" in Island of Graves.[50]
  • Thisbe was named after Thisbe from Pyramus and Thisbe. Mr. Appleblossom suggests the name.[50]
    • There are some small similarities between Thisbe Stowe and the Thisbe from the story, besides just their bravery and tragedy. For example, Pyramus and Thisbe would talk through a wall between their homes, and were forbidden from actually being together by their families; this is very similar to Thisbe and Rohan talking through and in the wall between their catacomb rooms, which was also forbidden.
  • Thisbe has a strong fear of heights and birds.
